For anyone who is wondering what in the heck do I mean by king warrior magician lover, well it is the summation of Dr. Robert Moore’s work that states the human males psyche is broken down into four different archetypes.
These four archetypes start when we are boys; the divine child, the hero, the precocious child, and the oedipal child. We all eventually grow up to take on the full masculine versions of these boyhood archetypes. Now if you have read the book than you know what I refer to them as in his fullness and if you have no read the book than you need to stop reading this article, go on to whatever your favourite place to buy books is and order it!

I digress, we will be imagining that all these archetypes are pictured in there fullness and we will be applying them to the world of sports. Now, every athlete in every sport should take on these qualities in order to not only become better athletes but better men as well.
King

The king is the ruler, but he is greatly focused on the well-being of his people as well as the growth of his lands; how does this relate to athletics? Athletes need to learn to be gracious in both victory and even more in defeat.
Upon winning you must show the competition that you expect to win by not excessively celebrating! Excessive celebration is the wrong message you want to send to both your own people as well as people outside your circle.
On the other side of victory is of course, defeat. When a king loses they do not get down on themselves or turn on their own they pick themselves back up, show the respect the opponent deserves and moves forward to the next battle. Athletes and competitors need to adopt this type of mindset because defeat is going to happen no matter what we do and when it does we need to be able to move forward and not let it affect our future competitions negatively.
Warrior

The warrior is the protector and seeker of justice when it comes to the archetypes and is responsible for our determination of completing tasks as well as the reason we may or may not enjoy confrontation. When it comes to athletics however I would be hard pressed to say that this archetype isn’t the most important.
When accessing the warrior in his fullness as an athlete it will give you the confidence as well as determination. The warrior energy is what gives the athlete the focus to accomplish a task for bigger reasons other than their own. They have a higher sense of reason outside of personal gain. Maybe they are completing it for a loved one or someone they are loyal to, a father or mother perhaps.
Accessing this archetype will be the key to keeping laser focus on the tasks that need to be done in order to be a successful athlete, and when the warrior energy is being accessed it is almost impossible to get away from the work you need to accomplish which is also why you need the other three archetypes to become more balanced.
Magician

The magician is the teacher as well as the student. He specializing in all things knowledge. The magician is good at math, technology, and engineering.
When it comes to athletics ever single competitor should be a student as well as teacher of their sport. Learn the ins and outs of what your sport is, Learn anatomy, learn biomechanics.
Take a course in something you have never learned before. Knowledge is the key to success and accessing the magician in his fullness will bring you that much closer to success in the field because the more you know about your sport the more likely you are to know how to beat your opponent.
Lover

The lover archetype is the uniting factor of other three archetypes; it is the archetype that causes us to feel love and compassion for all things. Why is this important for an athlete? Well it is simple really. Athletes that love everything about the sport they compete in will cause them to want to compete more, and train more.
A love for all things involved in the sport including other competitors, coaches, and training systems will make you want to access all of the other archetypes. But this archetype knows no boundaries and is also in need of the other three to keep it in control. The warrior archetype will keep the lover from become obsessed.
