Many a talented athlete has fallen victim to stage fright and it can be the difference between winning and losing, getting a lift or missing on, missing a catch or scoring a touchdown, breaking a record and coming in second. And the list could easily grow on and on.

So when coaches tell athletes to get their minds right before after or during practise it is more than important. Everyone loves to do the work that gets you to where you need in terms of physical work but a neglected part of training is mental.

Having a solid mental training program can be more valuable than having a all-star team put together a physical training program for you.

Your body is ready to do whatever your mind tells it to do only if you are in the right frame of mind and can call upon your mental abilities come game day.

Here are some things that need to be added into your daily routine that will get your mind on the right track to success!

Track your goals

Write down your goals every morning and every night. Constantly reminding yourself for the reason why your training in the first place should put the vision of you winning the upcoming event, and it will reassure you that you have a purpose to get out of bed and get the work done that needs to be done at full capacity.

visualize

Spend at least 30 minutes a day visualizing one thing in your training that you need to work on. If your training is missing something or your simply are not as good at some aspect of training then spend the time visualizing yourself doing the movement or action properly over and over and over again.

Meditate

Learn to meditate. There are hundreds of free applications and articles out there that will teach you how to properly meditate. Both for relaxation and for focus. I recommend meditating for 30 minutes to an hour before bed in order to let your body relax and let go of all the tension from the day. We want to let the body recover fully before hitting it hard again the next day. And if your body is in a constant state of tension you will not recover or sleep to your fullest potential and recovery is THE most important part of training!

Get tough

Train your brain to get tough. Do not allow yourself to get discourage by a weight on the bar. and don't allow yourself to get messed up by someone else's success or even failure. You're on a mission here to meet and exceed your goals not there's. Stay on course with what you have decided is important to you and your training. It is time to visualize every single work out the day before it comes. You need to get your brain to believe that it has already done this before a million times over now it's just time for the body to do it. Visualization can be an extremely good tool because the brain has no idea if something is real or if its fake!

Training your brain

Training your brain is as important if not more important than training your body. Getting your mind to perform at optimal levels is going to open the doors for your body to perform at levels never thought possible by the athlete. Spend at least 1 hour a day doing something to help with focus, relaxation, or performance and sooner than later you will be having to write down new goals to shoot for because you will have met the ones you have right now!
