Serious strength training can be a daunting task for the best of us. Especially if you are trying to do it by yourself without a quality training partner or training partners. A good support team is great in order to provide emotion and physical support. Not to mention being a part of a team that all have the same goal and driving force can help accelerate progress exponentially.

Emotional support

Strength training can be a mentally exhausting experience and even the strongest of athletes can get the bug of uncertainty. When reaching near maximal weight or going for all out sets till failure having someone or a group of people that can support you and encourage the right frame of mind can be the difference between making a personal best and failing completely. Having people around you that want to see success from themselves as well as success from others is going to create an unbeatable training atmosphere.

Physical Support

Having a group of serious training partners who all support each other through spotting, belt help and maybe even a slap or two. Can also greatly influence and enhance the way you train. Spotting is the most important aspect to having a good set of people around to help. You are putting your life in their hands and you need have all the confidence in the world that they have your back so all your efforts are focused solely on the task at hand.

How to pick the right training partners

Now that we know the importance of training partners we need to seek out people that have the same views as ourselves as well as have the same general goals and have a solid background in lifting. We do not want to have to teach people how to spot because you will always be wondering if they are going to be doing it properly.

This is about mutual respect as well as having something to add to a group. So your own knowledge and experience must be adaquate or they will never accept you. We want to create an enviroment where everyone will flourish and make progress.

What I have come to realize through all my years lifting and being apart of different crews of people is there is always someone who is the strongest, someone who is the smartest or most knowledgeable, the rookie, and someone who is the most enthusiastic. There can be multiples of each in a group but they all have their place and all have one goal in mind. Make themselves and their training partners the strongest they can be.

So when deciding who to training with it is important to make sure that your in a positive and constructive. We do not need any negativity when we train and the minute that someone is being negative either they change the attitude quick or go somewhere else. Because there is no time for arguing or bickering in the middle of training and losing focus on the tasks at hand. Everyone plays a part and no one is better then the next. Just because you may or may not be the strongest does not matter one day the rookie could be stronger than the current strongest person in the group. So have respect for each other and make same serious strength gains!
